Fibromyalgia: Risk Factors
Fibromyalgia can happen to anyone; male or female, young or old, rich or poor. Despite that reality, there are certain types of people who are at a higher risk of fibromyalgia (2-4% of the worldwide population have FMS, but not all of them have the high risks).
- Female
- Age 35+
- Overweight/obese
- Genetic (someone else in the family has it)
- Chronic stress
- Traumatic injury
- Sleep disorders
- Post traumatic stress disorder
One or more of these risk factors can increase the chances of developing fibromyalgia if your body is predisposed to it. Then there are cases where none of these factors take place at all.
Prevention of this disease may seem impossible because if it is going to happen, it will happen, but there are things you can do to minimize your chances, especially if you have a family member with FMS: try and maintain a normal weight, eat a balanced diet, keep stress under control, and exercise on a regular basis. You may still get FMS, but you may also experience a milder form that is easier to control.
